Literacy Snapshot

I have always liked to read and I often notice things around me that are amusing to read. Over the last couple of days I have realized how much I really do read. But that was not the case this summer. I did not have all the text books to read over the summer. But I did start getting the Indianapolis Star and it is one thing that I read on a daily basis. I always look at the weather first thing in the morning so I know how to dress. When I get home I pick up the paper again and read the comic strips. Then I browse through the articles until something interesting catches my eye. Lately it has been about the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals drag racing which has been over the last week through today. Sometimes when I have nothing else to do, I will work on the crossword.
Other things that I read that I never really thought about are the directions on the back of food boxes and the receipts from restaurants. It seems like everyday I get a new bill in the mail and spend time writing checks. I often get online to pay bills and check my Facebook and MySpace before doing what I actually got online to do. I like reading what my friends are doing and picking on my little brother. On Friday I took my dog to the vet and while I was there I bought flea medicine and had to read the directions before putting it on my dogs. You do not usually think of stuff like that as part of the literate world, but when you are told to think about it, you do.
Then there is the homework. It takes about twenty minutes to look through all of the syllabi to find the homework for the next classes. Once I write that down, I am overwhelmed and ready to give up. But I just start with what is due first and work my way down the list. It took up my entire Saturday, with short breaks in-between. I sat at my dinner table for hours at a time reading science, math, and books on learning and behavior problems and answering math questions.
I have always liked to read, ever since I was a little girl. My favorites in elementary school were the Goosebumps and choose your own adventure chapter books. I have since then moved on to books that require a little more time and effort, like Christopher Moore. He is a wonderful author and I love reading his books. He has an odd sense of humor that I love.
